Geoff Keighley hosted Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 today (August 23rd), which included numerous gameplay and trailer reveals, as well as new game announcements too. If you didn’t have time to watch the two-hour event (Or did and want a brief recap), we’ve put together the ten best reveals from the show. Check them out below:

Hogwarts Legacy (2023)

Developer Avalanche Software made an appearance at the event to unveil a dark arts-themed trailer for Hogwarts Legacy. The trailer focuses on one of the game’s optional companion quests with Sebastian Sallow, which focuses on the danger of dark magic and the Unforgivable Curses. The trailer offers a look at inferi and mountain trolls, exploration of the Forbidden Forest, as well as some combat and puzzle-solving. It also confirmed some of the pre-order bonuses players can enjoy as well as the announcement of an official pre-order release date of Thursday, August 25th. The game will launch in February 2023.

Dune: Awakening (No date yet)

Funcom announced Dune: Awakening at Gamescom Opening Night Live; an open-world survival MMO based on the film universe of Dune and Frank Herbert’s series of novels. The game combines the grittiness and creativity of survival games with MMO elements; you’ll need to explore unmapped sectors of Arrakis to discover secrets and riches, escape sandworms, build shelters, and hunt for spice blooms while protecting your harvest from rival factions. The game will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC, with Beta sign-ups available now.

The Callisto Protocol (2022)

Gamescom Opening Night Live also premiered new footage of The Callisto Protocol, showcasing some of the game’s Mutation gameplay, where enemies can mutate into stronger and much more terrifying enemies if you don’t dispatch of them quickly enough. The new gameplay also showed Jacob Lee exploring a new area, enjoying a slip-and-slide, and using the Black Iron Prison’s environments to stealthily take out various alien enemies. The Callisto Protocol will launch on December 2nd for PC and all PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Sonic Frontiers (2022)

Sonic Team showcased a new trailer for Sonic Frontiers at Gamescom Opening Night Live, which featured a slew of gameplay with Sonic dashing across several worlds on the open world of Starfall Islands. It also showcased Sonic facing enemies on his new journey to stop a colossal threat and discover the secrets of the Ancients. Sonic Frontiers will launch on November 8th, 2022, for PC, Nintendo Switch, and all PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Lies Of P (2023)

The upcoming action-adventure RPG Lies Of P also made an appearance at Gamescom Opening Night Live. The brand-new trailer offered a closer look at the game, which is set in a dark Belle Époque world and follows Pinocchio as he attempts to become a real boy. The trailer features exploration and combat, much of which looks to be inspired by Dark Souls. The game will release in 2023 on PC and all PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series (2023)

Telltale Games unveiled a brand-new trailer for its upcoming adventure game The Expanse, which is based on the Amazon television show of the same name. The new trailer offered a look at the game’s story, which is set before the events of the television show and follows Camina Drummer – played by the actress from the show – who leads a scavenging crew on the hunt for mysterious treasure. The trailer also showcased new gameplay, some behind-the-scenes information, and confirmed a release date of summer 2023.

Scars Above (Early 2023)

Gamescom Opening Night Live also featured a trailer for Scars Above, a sci-fi adventure game by Mad Head Games that sees you explore a mysterious alien world. According to the developer’s website, the game “combines the rewarding feel of overcoming difficulty with a compelling and intricate story”. Although the trailer did not confirm a release date, Mad Head Games’ website lists an early 2023 launch.

Wyrdsong (No date yet)

New development studio Something Wicked Games, which was formed by industry veterans from Bethesda Game Studios and Obsidian Entertainment, shared a brief and hauntingly mysterious teaser for their upcoming game Wyrdsong. According to a press release, the game is an open-world historical fantasy RPG set in a fictionalised Portugal during the middle ages. Players will be forced to question their reality and the choices they make.

Gotham Knights (2022)

Warner Bros Games Montréal made an appearance at Gamescom Opening Night Live to debut a brand-new story trailer for Gotham Knights that showcased a look at villains like influencer Harley Quinn, shape-shifter Clayface, Mr. Freeze, and the mysterious Court Of Owls. The studio also announced a revised release date of October 21st, launching four days earlier than previously planned.

Dead Island 2 (2023)

Gamescom Opening Night Live ended with a reveal of Dead Island 2. The first trailer for the game was released in 2014 and two new trailers made their debut today, featuring new character Jacob who is one of the game’s six playable characters. The second trailer showcased gameplay with plenty of gory melee-based combat. The game will release on February 3rd, 2023, for PC, Google Stadia, and all PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
