PS5 Gets VRR Support This Week To Boost Game Performance

PS5 VRR Support Update

Sony has announced that it’s releasing a new update this week to roll out Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).

The technology, which is available on HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible televisions and monitors, dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the PlayStation 5’s graphical output to boost select games’ performance and minimise or eliminate frame pacing issues and screen tearing.

According to a new blog post from Sony, Playstation 5 games can be optimised for VRR via a new game patch, and the studio has confirmed that the following games will receive VRR patches to enable the technology in the coming weeks:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call Of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes Of Midgard

Sony states that future games may include VRR support at launch, and recommends you stay tuned to the games’ social channels for updates on their patch launches.

When rolled out, VRR can be enabled on HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible televisions and monitors by heading to your PlayStation 5’s console settings and the “Screen and Video” section, where the technology can be enabled or disabled.

Sony hasn’t shared an official date for the VRR update, but you can expect to receive it within the next few days.
