Dune: Spice Wars Gets Early Access Date, New Details On Fremen Faction

Dune: Spice Wars Fremen

Developer Shiro Games has announced an early access release date for Dune: Spice Wars and has revealed details on the game’s playable Fremen faction.

Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game featuring 4X elements that is based on Frank Herbert’s acclaimed book, Dune. The game, which was announced at The Game Awards 2021, sees four factions fight for control of Arrakis and its spice – the most valuable resource in the universe.

You can play as four factions, including House Atreides, House Harkonnen, Smugglers, and the newly revealed desert-dwelling Fremen, all of which have distinct strengths and weaknesses.

Fremen, for example, can travel further before suffering from exhaustion or alerting Arrakis’ deadly sandworms, can use the beasts to travel faster across the map and strike opponents suddenly, can lay devastating ambushes, and hide inside sandstorms to surprise weakened or unsuspecting enemies.

According to publisher Funcom, the Fremen faction is led by Liet Kynes who is a planetologist assigned to Arrakis to study its spice cycle. Joining Kynes are four Fremen councillors, including Chani Kynes, Stilgar Ben Fifrawi, Mother Ramallo, and Otheym.

The Fremen have five unique units, including Warriors that use Arrakis’ terrain to disorient opponents, Infiltrators that stay invisible and unheard until they strike, Skirmishers that ambush well-armoured units, Fedaykins that get stronger the more opponents they face, and Kulon Caravans that set up camp to heal other units.

Dune: Spice Wars will enter Early Access on Steam on April 26th, 2022. The game is expected to launch on PC via Steam later this year, and is one of two Dune games from Funcom, the second being an open-world survival multiplayer title set in the franchise’s universe.
