Bandai Namco Closes Dark Souls PC Servers To Address Hack

Dark Souls Servers

Bandai Namco has closed the Dark Souls online servers for PC over hack security issues.

As first reported by The Verge yesterday (January 22nd), a remote code execution (RCE) exploit found in Dark Souls 3 allows hackers to take control of a player’s PC, run malicious code and potentially steal sensitive information from the target. Although unconfirmed, it’s possible the same hack could be possible in Elden Ring if not fixed.

Twitch streamer The_Grim_Sleeper fell victim to the hack during a livestream, but the non-malicious hacker later revealed in a Dark Souls discord that they were simply trying to raise awareness of the issue after trying to contact FromSoftware but not receiving a response.

Earlier today, the official Dark Souls Twitter announced that it had temporarily shut down all PvP servers for Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls: Remastered, and Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition on PC to investigate the hack, although servers for PlayStation and Xbox remained unaffected.

Before the servers were closed, community-made anti-cheat mod Blue Sentinel was updated to protect against the RCE hack, allowing modded users to play online risk-free.

Bandai Namco and FromSoftware haven’t detailed when the servers will be restored, but we’ll be sure to update this page when they are.
