Day 4: Zombieland Impressions

After a pretty lengthy sleep in, I decided to finally get around to watching Zombieland. I’ve heard great things about it, and seeing that I enjoy Left 4 Dead so much, I thought it would be a good movie to watch. I haven’t seen a movie for some time now, so seemed a bit appropriate to get one to watch. :)

For starters, Zombieland is pretty much a comedy film without going over the top. It’s humour is well balanced and the character personalities is what makes it work. We’ve got Jesse Eisenberg playing the main character, who is looking to travel across to Columbus (also his nickname in the movie) to find his parents amidst the zombie apocalypse. We also have Woody Harrelson, in my opinion the show stealer, playing the tough dude ready to kill zombies in whatever manner he feels like and generally unleash anger and rage even if there aren’t any zombies around. Emma Stone is also here, along with Abigail Breslin, completing the group of four survivors who eventually find themselves together.

The movie is obviously about these four survivors travelling through what’s now called Zombieland and killing some zombies. In searching for some information about this game, I did come across this amusing picture of a GTA version of Zombieland poster:

But anyway, it’s an enjoyable movie to watch. It’s not scary by any means, unless you find zombies scary anyway (or clowns). In fact, makes me feel like playing some Left 4 Dead 2…

Day 3: Meet the Scout

I did intend to play a fair bit of Metro 2033, however after struggling on the surface of Moscow due to Nazis, I turned my attention to Team Fortress 2. I usually play as the Heavy, but also play around with Soldier, Pyro and Demoman. Today however, I thought I’d give the Scout a try since he’s pretty quick and very useful in Capture the Flag matches. As a result, I was able to capture the flag, or rather intelligence in Team Fortress 2, all three times in one game. It’s good fun anyway playing a Scout due to the speed he has and the quick fire of the pistol. It’s also good fun to use the baseball bat and boink someone.

Day 2: Steam disappointment, Burnout fun, GFW blunders

So second day of my precious holiday and boy, the time is flying by! I can’t actually believe the weekend, and Christmas Day & Boxing Day have gone by so quickly. I didn’t even watch any of the Christmas TV programmes, although I have been informed that there wasn’t anything special on anyway. I’m not much of a TV person as it is, I find that 99% of it is junk.

First of all, Steam sales. Today was a bit of a disappointment. Rather than put out new daily sales, they decided to put a top deals one up instead. So for people who missed out on particular deals such as Witcher, Borderlands, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and others, here’s your chance to pick them up. Oh and Mass Effect (1&2) is there as well. I was tempted by ME, however with the huge backlog of games to play, I decided I don’t need to replay ME at this point in time. Plus I do already own both Collector Editions on 360.

With Steam sales aside, one game that I have been playing and enjoying is Burnout Paradise. I’ve always enjoyed Burnout games since the first PlayStation, and I remember playing it tons on the PSP. Burnout Paradise runs like a charm on my Alienware M11x, and what’s even better is that I can plug it into the 32″ HD TV that’s wall mounted, and enjoy a fantastic experience with an XBox 360 controller. Now you may ask why didn’t I just buy it for 360? Well I only got it for about £3 on Steam anyway, and secondly I can play it anytime on my laptop at great frame rates. It’s an awesome to just jump into and play for short bursts, mash up some cars and have a race through the city and hills.

I also bought Batman: Arkham Asylum off Steam, again for about £3. After downloading it (about 8gb) and then starting it up, I found myself encountering Games for Windows setting itself up. Not only that, but after signing in with my Live account, it started updating with the game at the menu screen in the background. I couldn’t so anything with the menu screen however, I just had to wait for the update. Along with other installations from GFW. Then it restarted the game and guess what, another update! Surely GFW can do this in the background as it was updating it’s own client rather than the game. It’s a pretty drawn out process that’s unnecessary and a bit frustrating.

That’s all for today though. I’m going to try make some more progress with Metro 2033 tomorrow since I’m just over the halfway point in that. Let’s see how it goes!

Day 1: So Tired!

So first official day of the Christmas break, and it also happens to be Christmas day. I don’t really celebrate Christmas, we don’t have those lunch or dinner traditions at all so it doesn’t bother me. Instead some friends and I went and played some football, on an icy astro turf pitch, for a few solid hours and as a result, I feel knackered!

I then spent the remainder of the day generally lazing about, not doing much! It’s a good way to start the holidays off however. I did play just a bit of Team Fortress 2, and a few minutes of Left 4 Dead 2 with a pretty shockingly bad group of randoms. Hence the play session being just a few minutes. Besides that, I had a check at the Steam sale and picked up Batman: Arkham Asylum for £3.25. That’s an awesome game and I’ll definitely be re-playing that sometime. I already have it on XBox 360, but I’m kinda transitioning to PC and selling a lot of my 360 titles.

So that’s pretty much it. I’m expecting to actually do a lot more stuff tomorrow, but for today I’ll call it a day. Oh, and before I forget, Merry Christmas all!

Merry Christmas

Preparing for the 10 Days of Xmas

As you can first see, major change to the website. I’ve decided to try and use WordPress, just for convenience sake rather than anything else. Previously I was using my own CMS (Content Management System) that I had coded in PHP. There was a lot of tweaks and re-structuring I had intended to do, such as use tags within it, however it would have required a rather large rehaul. Quite frankly, I just don’t have the time for that now, so I invested some of the time moving the archives to WordPress and slightly tweaking it up for my own content. I have to say, the outcome isn’t too shoddy. :)

I now have 10 days of Xmas/New Years holidays, and I intend to play a fair amount of games. I’ll be trying to blog everyday with some new content, possibly multiple times a day depending on how things go. With Steam having their sales, there’s a good chance I’ll be picking up even more games along the way, despite having a pretty large list to play. Some of these include Metro 2033, BioShock 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Just Cause 2 and a few more.

Keep checking back daily for more information on a variety of games, my impressions/opinions and hopefully random stuff along the way! Merry Christmas to everyone! :D

Mass Effect: Retribution (Book)

I’m a huge fan of the Mass Effect series and have completed both iterations so far. I’m anxiously waiting for the final instalment of the game, but in the mean time to keep me indulged in all things Mass Effect, I’ve been reading the books. I pretty much picked up the first two books (Revelation and then Ascension) when they came out. Revelation takes place prior to the first game, while Ascension takes place between the first and second. Now, Retribution takes place between the second and third.

For those who haven’t read any of the Mass Effect books, it’s not advisable to pick up a book out of order as they don’t directly relate to the characters in the game. They use the setting and general events in the game to tell a semi-independent story, which are pretty continuous between all three books.

So far, I’m fairly early into Retribution, but there are strong links to Mass Effect 2 and the second book, Ascension. It definitely adds an extra dimension to the Mass Effect universe, much like what the Star Wars novels do for its universe. Pretty interesting stuff! And very entertaining for Mass Effect fans too.

More Peggle Less BioShock and a working netbook!

Well, work has been fairly busy recently, and when I come home I’m usually too tired to do much. Now, you may say playing a video game is a perfect way to unwind, but I’ve just been way too lazy for that and end up web browsing and watching The Simpsons. Productive to say the least.

The only bit of real gaming remains to be on my iPhone during the commutes to work. And that game would be Peggle. I’ve finished the game itself but I’m working through the challenges, which as the name suggests are quite challenging indeed.

I have spent a bit of time however tweaking a netbook that I’ve had sitting around for some time. It’s an Advent Milano, probably the least famous netbook around. Not sure why it’s not marketed much, PC World had it as an exclusive netbook so it didn’t get much coverage. Even if you try to Google it, it doesn’t come up with many proper results with articles about the netbook.

I did find out however that the netbook is actually a remake of a Taiwanese model instead. I found this out quite painfully, when I formatted the laptop and was searching everywhere for drivers. I was testing a few different operating systems and seeing which ran the best on this netbook. Previously, I had Windows 7 installed on it. I quite like Windows 7, I think it’s one of Microsoft’s best operating systems ever and a much needed one after Vista. However, it did run a little slow and I think it was draining the battery life on this netbook.

I then tried out Ubuntu Netbook Edition. It’s quite a nice distribution of Linux, specifically built for netbooks. Installation takes a little longer than I would have liked, however there is a pretty cool feature for the OS to run off a CD or USB to test it out and see what it’s like. I did a proper install instead though to give it a real whirl. It’s pretty decent, and comes with quite a bit of preloaded software, however it didn’t recognise my Wireless device so I had to tweak around quite a bit to get that working. For those who haven’t used Linux, let’s just say installing stuff like drivers isn’t exactly the easiest thing to do!

Finally, I gave Windows XP a try. I never really used XP on this netbook before even though it came preinstalled with it. I straight away went to Windows 7 since I had a free version from university. Coming back to XP however was a great choice. It’s extremely stable with the updates, and runs really fast. On top of that, the battery life has been given a much needed boost and I don’t need to worry about installing drivers! Woohoo!

So for now, I’m using the netbook with Windows XP since it seems to run the best. It also gives me good compatibility with software, such as Microsoft Office (which is pretty needed for work purposes) and a few games here and there, such as Peggle World of Warcraft Edition! I do plan to do some programming on here and have installed IntelliJ Idea 9 Community Edition (basically the free one) as my IDE of choice. I used to always go for Netbeans, but my job really changed my choice on that!

Hectic Times, Trudging Along and Tech Support

As you can imagine, it’s been a fairly hectic time with full time work. It always digs into gameplay time, however that wasn’t the main cause this past weekend. Instead, the family machine decided to burn out as a most inopportune time! It meant that most of the weekend was spent doing tech support at home, something that I don’t really fancy doing. As a result, gameplay time was virtually zilch.
,br>
Let me update on the computer though. It was rather odd, the wire at the back going into the power supply unit (PSU) must have become slightly loose, since we could smell something burning and the PC just turned off itself. We disconnected everything and opened up the PC to be greeted by a strong smell of burning plastic, or burning something. Whatever it was, it just didn’t smell good and was most likely very bad for my lungs.

I’m pretty sure it’s the PSU that’s gone, since no power is going through to the computer, it doesn’t even turn on. That’s not a big deal to replace or get a new part, however this is one of those pre-built computers out of the shop. Wanting to fit in your own pieces is a nightmare since these computers are built in the factories, and as a result everything is so damn close to each other that it becomes a real hassle getting things out.

Luckily, we know someone that can help us, so hopefully we’ll get the computer repaired pretty soon. Nonetheless, the weekend was spent trying all sorts of things, including picking up a temporary replacement computer from someone’s house which turned out to be ridiculously old despite it’s pretty standard Dell look. So old it has 256MB RAM, and the recovery discs was expecting Windows 98 to be installed on the machine… Wow.

In terms of games, I did get to play a bit of Bioshock 2 and GTA Vice City Stories. Bioshock 2 seems to be a bit harder than the first game, combat-wise. I don’t seem to have any issues when fighting a Big Sister, however when fighting a swarm of splicers, they sure seem to be more hard hitting than in the first game. I’m still extremely early in the game, so I definitely look forward to playing it more slowly but surely. Slowly being the keyword.

As for GTA Vice City Stories, it’s been a good pick up and play game. The missions are quite fun, except one annoying mission where I have to get booze out of a burning warehouse, and one slight turn caused me to blow the place sky high. Besides that, it feels great to be able to roam around Vice City on the PSP – definitely a technical achievement.

That’s all for now. On a last note, my train journeys are occupied with Peggle on the iPhone. If you own an iPhone or iPod Touch, get it. That’s all!

Mass Effect 2… not quite

I pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition of Mass Effect 2. It’s sitting at home, while I’m stuck at university having to do plenty of work!

I went home a couple of weeks ago, when it was delivered over the weekend, and got the chance to unravel it and check out the contents. The design on the tin case is very slick indeed, although I was hoping it would be more ME1 styled with an overall tin box. Never the less, it was pretty good.

As for the actual game, I haven’t played it yet. :( I’m hoping to start it a bit this weekend, so hopefully I’ll get an update then. :)

Wha?

Wow, it has certainly been a very long time since I have updated the website. I always keep planning to update, but just never get around to it. It’s not like I haven’t been playing a few games here and there, over the Christmas I finished Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and also played through the campaigns in Left 4 Dead 2, both extremely enjoyable! Then my 360 broke down… :(

I’ve also been playing a bit here and there on my PSP, mainly The Bigs 2 since that is such an awesome game and great to pick up and play. I’ve also purchased GTA Vice City Stories, since never completed it before, and also Little Big Planet, so I have a bit of gaming to do.

Regarding the website, I have just been so busy with university since it’s my final year that I haven’t had the chance to update it at all. I do have plans for the future for the website and will begin further development in the Summer, after I finish uni, so that’s something to look forward to! :)

In the mean time, I will definitely try to update this now and then, fill in with some gaming stuff when I do play. For now though, all I can say is that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic still stands up as an amazing game even today! If you don’t know what it is, go and check it out! It’s available via Steam on PC.
